USE CASE: Industrial Applications

AR, VR and 3D are not just inspiring in retail. Industry too is making use of the new, countless possibilities. Some examples from our customer Phoenix Contact.

We regularly present use cases from our customers in our blog to stimulate your imagination. We want you to experience the same level of enthusiasm that we feel ourselves again and again when customers use their products’ digital twins in a way we hadn’t even thought of.

That’s exactly the case with our customer Phoenix Contact. While many of our previous use cases were retail-centered, Phoenix Contact uses the digital twins of their products created with our technologies for a better product presentation as a basis for discussion in the early phases of product development.

In addition, the Phoenix Contact Sales Team can present their products for customers in a way they never could before with the Phoenix Contact eXtended Reality (PXR) app, an augmented reality sales tool. Features of PXR include access to product digital twins with full 3D-control on-screen, x-ray glimpse, AR view of products in their space, and immersive feature animations.

Selected experiences that are found in the PXR app can also be accessed directly from the Phoenix Contact website and targeted from brochures and product instructions as well – without the need for an app.

What could also be of interest to many of you: Phoenix Contact uses the 3D models in Microsoft Office applications; for example in MS Powerpoint. Since our technologies provide you with the 3D models in all common formats, this can be done easily using drag & drop.

Here’s a Powerpoint presentation including one of Phoenix Contact’s 3D models:

Capable Devices

You don’t need an app anymore to view AR models. By now the technology has been deeply integrated into the mobile operating systems iOS and Android as both Google and Apple see the enormous potential.

As the result almost two billion smartphones have this capability at present (March 2020). And on your side you don’t have to do more than add a normal link to your online shop or website; no initial investment, no software development.

iOS/Apple
AR requires an iOS or iPadOS device with iOS 11 (or later) and an A9 processor or later; in detail:

– iPhone 6S or later
– iPad Pro (all models)
– iPad (5th generation) or later
– iPad mini (5th generation) or later
– iPad Air (3rd generation) or later
– iPod touch (7th generation) or later
