For two decades, we have been an innovator and technology leader in 3D, virtual reality and augmented reality. Our vision has always been to make the Internet “accessible”. That is why we are investing continuously and with all our heart in the development of these future technologies. In this section, we take part in selected research activities. In part, it is about patents and company secrets, which obviously can’t be disclosed in detail.
SPX file format
Our SPX data format is unmatched when it comes to storage and transmission of 3D data. Due to its minimal file sizes, it is particularly suitable for mobile applications. The development always focused on transmitting HD photorealistic surfaces visually lossless with smallest bandwidth. If one looks at the statistics on internet usage, it becomes clear how important this property is for the future distribution of 3D, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. In Europe, the proportion of page views by mobile devices in 2015 was just under 30%. In North America already at almost 35%. According to many experts, this trend will continue at a rapid pace.
That is why we continuously develop this file format even further, adapting it to the needs of the future. This ensures that we keep being ahead of time.
Like many other areas, digitization also has a fundamental effect on medicine and its possibilities. For example, the technologies of 3D printing promise to be able to print whole organs of the human body in the near future. Printing skin already works – until a complete heart is printable, some time will pass. The area of nanotechnology will enable, amongst other things, to inject nano-submarines into the bloodstream, to deliver software-controlled drugs at precisely the exact dose to the human body. Whether such a medication delivery is necessary is measured online continuously, for example, in the lacrimal fluid of the eye by means of a smart contact lens. In the first step, Virtual Reality will provide a better understanding of the fundamental processes in the human body. But also the actual diagnostics, medical care and therapy will be given new possibilities both by Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. This is why medical technology is one of our core research areas.
Revolution through online learning
Our teaching and school system and the whole way we learn today are facing a major change: many experts predict a revolution through digitization. One of them is Sebastian Thrun, former Stanford professor and vice president of Google, who founded the online academy Udacity with some other professors in 2011 and the US magazine Foreign Policy at the end of 2012 ranked him fourth among the “100 most influential thinkers in the world “. In an F.A.Z. interview of January 2015 he explained his vision of the future of learning: on the one hand, learning will take place “on demand” in the future – on the other hand there will be a democratization of knowledge. “Anyone who wants to learn and move forward will be able to do that, regardless of wealth.” says Thrun.
We share that opinion. However, we believe that Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality will change learning back to the natural, human learning habit. It will re-develop the natural learning behavior to as it was before the invention of book-printing limited everything to two dimensions. Therefore, one of our research areas is “VR Learning”.
